Abstract

This study examined the role of adult education programmes for controlling the spread of diseases in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni and Bonny Local Government Areas of Rivers State. Three research questions guided this study. The study adopted descriptive survey design. The population of the study was 2,295 members of community-based organization and community health workers. The sample of the study was 463 respondents comprising 338 members of community-based organisations and 125 community health workers. Taro Yamen formula was used to compute the sample from the population of the study. The study used a self- designed questionnaire for data collection. The research instrument was validated and the reliability of the instrument was established as 0.89 using Cronbach alpha method. The research questions were answered using the mean statistics and standard deviation. The findings of the study among other things, showed that health education, environmental education, mobilization and awareness campaign programmes of adult education have contributed in controlling the spread of diseases in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni and Bonny Local Government Areas of Rivers State. It was therefore recommended that health education and other adult education programmes should be taken to all the rural communities to teach the people how to control the spread of diseases.
