Influence of Quality Assurance Strategies on Lecturers’ Performance in Rivers State Universities in Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the influence of quality assurance strategies on lecturers’ performance in Rivers State universities in Nigeria. Two research questions were answered while corresponding null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance to guide the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study consisted of 4686 lecturers (Male = 3233; Female = 1453) in Rivers State universities. The sample size of the study was 369 as calculated using Taro Yamane sample size determination method. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 255 male and 114 female lecturers which was used for the study. The instrument for data collection was a self-structured questionnaire titled, “Influence of Quality Assurance Strategies on Lecturers’ Performance Questionnaire” which was designed after modified 4-point rating scale. The instrument was validated by experts in the Departments of Educational Management and Measurement and Evaluation, thereafter tested for reliability. Reliability coefficients of 0.80 and 0.85 were established through Cronbach Alpha. Data collected were analyzed as mean and standard deviation statistics were used to answer the research question while the null hypothesis formulated were tested using z-test. The study found that performance evaluation and availability of physical resources as quality assurance strategies influence lecturers’ performance in Rivers State Universities in Nigeria. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that there should be periodic lecturer’s performance evaluation to identify lecturers’ areas of strength and weaknesses, as this will enable them sustain their areas of strength and improve on their weaknesses. In addition, adequate facilities and infrastructure should be provided by Universities to facilitate lecturers’ tasks delivery.
