Influence of Basic Literacy Education Programme on Environmental Sustainability in Rural Communities in Rivers State.

Abstract

The study examines influence of basic literacy education programmes on environmental sustainability in rural communities in Rivers State. One research question was answered with one corresponding null hypothesis that were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance to guide the study. The study employs the descriptive research survey design. The target population of the study consist of 593 respondents comprising of 207 male and 386 females who ae beneficiaries of adult education training in adult training centres in Rivers State. A sample of 593 respondents (Adult male beneficiaries = 207, Adult female beneficiaries = 386) were used for the study.  The instrument for the data collection was a self-constructed questionnaire titled “Influence of Basic Literacy Education on Environmental Sustainability in Rural Communities Questionnaire” which was designed in the pattern of the modified Likert 4-point rating scale of agreement. The reliability of the instrument was established for a measure of internal consistency using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and a reliability coefficient of 0.81 was obtained. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer the research question while z-test was used to test the null hypothesis. The study found that basic literacy education programme influence environmental sustainability in rural communities in Rivers State. Based on the finding of the study, it was recommended that women organisations should support rural dwellers to participate more in reading, writing and numeracy which will make them enable them to know about activities that threatens the environment.
